Data Product Heuristics – Checklist

All the heuristics and guiding questions you need for designing or reviewing data products, whether you're working alone or in a workshop. You can find explanations and examples on the Data Product Heuristics page.

Data product: Archetype: Date:

Start with the fundamentals, then add the heuristics for the archetype. Heuristics are guiding questions, not rigid rules.

Fundamentals

1. Clearly defined consumer & use cases – Describe its main purpose in one sentence.

2. Stable ownership – One domain, one team.

3. Consistent data quality – Quality attributes consistent across all output ports.

4. Low integration burden – Smallest useful standalone unit.

5. Bounded scope – Only what is needed, not what might be useful someday.

Source-aligned

1. Semantic coherence – All data required for interpretation.

2. Single business domain – One module. Not all data.

3. Source data blast radius – Different source, different data product.

Aggregate

1. Value & reuse – Build it when 3+ teams need it.

2. Cost & complexity

3. Scope & governance discipline – General-purpose. Strictly scoped.

Consumer-aligned

1. Clear purpose – One sentence. Verb plus object.

2. Natural, focused size – Sized by the job, not the artifact.

3. Meaningful boundaries – Process lines, not system lines.

4. Business consumers – Name the team. Then the data product.
